Giardia protoza can cause chronic diarrhea in hikers and travellers who drink contaminated water. The trophozoite attaches to the mucosa of the small bowel, preventing nutrients from being absorbed into the bloodstreem. To my eye, the trophozoites look like cartoon characters.
