I stumbled onto an even more
bizarre procession today in the Maya
village of
Zunil. This one featured young men dressed up as Marvin the Martian, complete with blond wigs, sunglasses, and multicolored cap feathers. No
rayguns. This ceremony hardly looked like Catholicism to me, but when I asked an old lady about the
occasion, she said "
Semana Santa."

The truth is that I am a little tired of
Semana Santa (everything is closed; very stressful for a New Yorker), but I
could not resist posting these pictures.
The colors are spectacular, no?
